President Robin McNulty convened the regular meeting of
the Springfield Township Business Association at 8:05 a.m.
on Thursday, July 8, 1999 at The Grove Banquet Hall, 9158
Winton Road. Twenty-three members were in attendance.
The Association welcomed John Eberle, Executive Director
of Sunrise Assisted Living, the new complex at 9101 Winton
Road (formerly Kerrington Assisted Living).
Announcements:
Cathy Bonewell explained details of the Business Expo to
be held from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 1999 in
The Grove Banquet Hall. Participation in this event is free
to paid members of the Association and will be a very
effective way to acquaint the community with our members.
Businesses can expect to receive good exposure to the public
because Springfield Township will be hosting a free concert
by Ooh La La & the Greasers and a Classic Car Cruise-in
that evening.
Mr. McNulty called for additional volunteers to staff the
sandwich booth at the Township sponsored "Groovin' at the
Grove" free concert on Friday, July 16. This is a
fund-raising activity as well as a community service. STBA
has also committed to operating this booth during the August
13 concert.
Committee Reports:
Adopt- a Highway &endash; members are asked to report to
the Fire Station, 8375 Winton Road, at 8:00 a.m. on
Saturday, July 31 for the next clean-up of Ronald Reagan
Cross County Highway. Brightly colored T-shirts will be
available for workers in addition to the required "orange
vests".
Membership &endash; Buzz Volz presented a Membership 2000
packet containing information regarding the membership
drive. The Association's goal is to double our membership
roster by 2000. A packet is being assembled for distribution
to potential members.
Guest Speakers:
Fire Chief Rob Leininger presented a detailed and very
interesting talk on Emergency Preparedness. He noted that
the Township is constantly working to update its Emergency
Operating Plan and businesses should do the same. Of
particular interest was a suggestion to review insurance
coverage annually and to make sure members have Business
Interruption Insurance coverage. The Fire Department, OSHA,
and your insurance company are often untapped resources that
will provide on-site risk assessment at no cost.
Chief Leininger noted that early warning is the key to
survival during severe weather such as a tornado. However,
warnings through the Internet, television and commercial
radio probably would be interrupted by a power outage so it
is important to have a weather-alert radio with battery
back-up.
Police Chief Dave Heimpold also stressed the importance
of utilizing the Police Department's free site-assessment
and employee education services before the fact rather than
after a crime is committed. Officers will assess the
business, physical facilities, and operating procedures and
make appropriate suggestions to reduce the probability of
loss. Chief Heimpold did suggest that businesses check the
history of a prospective employee before that person is
hired and becomes familiar with your operations.
