STBA News - Volume 2, Issue 6
November, 1999
By Joseph Gorman, Vice-President
As we near the election meeting to be held Wednesday, November 10, let's review the successes of the Springfield Township Business Association (STBA).
In May, a membership survey resulted in five 1999-2000 goals:
- Double the membership
- Attract high-profile guest speakers at meeting
- Publish newsletter every other month
- Publish a membership directory
- Hold a Business Expo
Gail Jacobs (River City Capital) now directs our membership campaign. Gail requests that each member recruit two new members to help us meet our first goal. An STBA coupon program offer as part of a new member packet is also something that Gail is considering. Call her at 522-7491 to be involved.
STBA President Robin McNulty and Nancy Grathwohl (5th/3rd Bank) from the Program Committee have procured speakers for such topics as Y2K, employee retention and crime prevention. Craig Keller (Express Graphics) helped Cathy Bonewell (Purrfect Place) produce the newsletter. Craig also developed the membership directory.
The STBA has 70 members, and five standing committees. Three morning general meetings were held in 1999, averaging about 35 attendees at each meeting. We also had our first luncheon meeting September 9 and it was also very well attended.
The STBA participated in two Springfield Township "Groovin' at the Grove" events this summer, selling hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, and metts. Thanks to everyone who helped in the food booth.
Cathy Bonewell, Eddie Lutz, and Kathy Depperman coordinated the first annual STBA Business Expo held at the Grove in August. Twenty-two companies participated, and we look forward to building on this success in 2000.
Highway cleanup of our stretch of the Cross County highway always met with interesting weather. In the four times we picked up trash, it was either freezing, very hot, or raining buckets! No matter, as the volunteers stuffed many black bags of garbage, and their efforts resulted in a cleaner roadway. Thanks so much to Fire Chief Rob Leininger for hosting our beleaguered crews and for coordinator Peg Doller's efforts to sign up volunteers.
An important issue beyond the year 2000 for businesses along Winton Road is the proposed widening and improved access management south from North Bend Road to Lakeside Drive at Winton Woods. Kathy Koops will spearhead STBA's participation on the Winton Road planning efforts.
A special thanks to Thom Schneider and Waycross Community Media for videotaping STBA regular meetings. Special thanks also to the Springfield Township Administration, including Administrator Mike Hinnenkamp and our recording secretary Peg Doller, both of whom have been very supportive of the STBA. The Grove has been our official meeting place since our inception March 1998. Thanks to the staff for all its help.
We look forward to growing the Springfield Township Business Association with new members. Nearly 700 businesses are located in Springfield Township, and this presents a great opportunity to grow. Please let your fellow business owners know about the STBA and encourage them to join and to get involved. Call Joe Gorman at 521-4297 if you have any questions regarding the STBA.
Cathy Bonewell and Gene Burton are going to start planning next year's Business Expo in February 2000. If you want to be part of the planning phase or have any input, please get with them after the first of the year.
Springfield Township is having its Holiday Happening on December 5th. It is going to be a little different from last year. They will still have all sorts of activities, but they will be in heated tents. If there is enough interest, they are thinking of having a crafts tent for people to sell holiday items/crafts.

Next Meeting November 10th
Our speaker on November 10th at 8 am will be Tom Talley from Talley Electronics. Talley Electronics was established in 1958 by Thomas Talley, Sr. At the time, it's primary focus was on tv & stereo repair and security systems. Tom Talley, Jr., took over the company in 1994 after his father passed away. His focus has been strictly on security. He installs and monitors closed circuit tv, hidden cameras and other types of security systems. He installs units in residential as well as commercial sites. He will be speaking to us on the different types of security systems and their functions. He will also bring us up to date on current security technologies.
