Township Does Great Job Clearing Roads

by Cathy Bonewell, Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Springfield Township employees who worked so hard to clear our roads over the New Year's holiday. The did a tremendous job. In fact, I got a false sense of security because the surrounding communities were not as cleared as our own. GOOD JOB!!!

STBA Meeting Dates

The STBA meets every other month. Here are the dates for our regular meetings in 1999:

  • January 14
  • March 11
  • May 13
  • July 8
  • September 9
  • November 10 (Thursday is Veteran's Day)

The meetings begin at 8:00 a.m. and we're done by 9:15 a.m. There is plenty of free parking at the Grove.

Next Meeting Jan. 14

The Grove - 9158 Winton Road at 8 a.m.

At our January meeting we will have Barry Hallman, Hallman Consulting & Services, Ltd., as our speaker on Year 2000 issues. Making your business ready for the year 2000 affects every part of the organization and extends to all business partners, including large and small customers, utility companies, vendors, service providers and your own internal equipment. These are real issues so come hear Mr. Hallman to hear expert solutions to the Y2K situation.

Adopt A Highway

Nov. 14 Clean up of R. R. Highway Adds Shine

Energetic volunteers helped clean the STBA adopted stretch of Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway (between Galbraith Road and Hamilton Ave). We had lots of member interest in this project but only nine folks could help that day. You missed a fun time!

Come Spring we will have to clean our stretch of road again. Please sign up an expect a reminder phone call a few days before the event. We are asking for 2-4 hours of your time to help. If we have many more people, we may not even need that much. Volunteers enjoyed coffee and donuts in the morning and pizza for lunch at the Winton Road Fire Station. We made a big difference, filling many black garbage bags with all sorts of litter. Thanks to these hearty volunteers: Jean Cook, Cathy Bonewell, Joseph Gorman, Peg Doller, Nancy Grathwohl, Robin McNulty, Fire Chief Rob Leininger, Gene Burton, and Bob Will.

Annual Report

by Robin McNulty, President and Joseph Gorman, Vice-President

We are nearing an anniversary of sorts for the STBA. On January 26, 1998 a core group of business people met to discuss the need for a business association in Springfield Township. After several months of planning, nearly 700 businesses in the Townshiip were invited to a meeting on March 11, 1998 to determine interest in and potential for such a group.

Over 75 businesses responded positively and we had our first official meeting May 14, 1998. Articles of association wer adopted, officers, and board members were elected, membership applications and annual dues were accepted.

There are 60 members, four standing committees. Four general meetings were held in 1998, averaging about forty attendees for each meeting. Speakers were featured at each meeting, including such topics as "getting a business group started," Township land use plan, Winton Road widening, hiring practices, and white collar crime prevention.

STBA also established a web site, a newsletter, the Adopt-a-Highway program, got a banner printed, and participated in the first and the widely successful Springfield Township Holiday Happening December 6, 1998.

We look forward to growing the Association with new members. Please let your fellow business owners know about the STBA.
