SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

Board of Directors Meeting — June 14, 2001

PRESENT: Joseph Gorman, Deborah Reynolds, Bob Will, Bess Sprockett, Bob Trenkamp, Maggie Wesley, Don Huff, Melanie McNulty.

The Board of Directors met at 8:00 A.M. at Brentwood Bowl, 9176 Winton Road. Maggie Wesley hosted the meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Bob Will reported a total of 62 paid members to date. As of the last board meeting, the treasury had $3,886.66. We had an income of $139.76 and expenses of $396.92, leaving a balance of $3,629.50. Most of the expenses were due to postage.

Business Expo: Don Huff reported that there are 5 businesses committed to the Expo so far, but feels confident all 27 available tables will be sold by July 13. Participating businesses will be sent posters to display in their place of business promoting the event. They will also receive tickets to hand out to customers for entrance to the Expo. Don will communicate with Melanie McNulty about how many tables and chairs will be needed. Bob Will and Gene Burton volunteered to help set up the Grove the afternoon of July 13. Time of the Expo is 6:60 until 8:00 P.M.

Joe Gorman and Don Huff will also put together an informational tri-fold brochure explaining the advantages of becoming a member of the STBA. These will be ready for distribution at the Expo.

Joe Gorman has also ordered signs advertising the Business Expo to be placed throughout the Township.

Groovin’ at the Grove: Maggie Wesley reported that she has workers in place to sell food items at the STBA food booth on July 13.

Programs Report: Deborah Reynolds reported that the STBA Happy Hour and Picnic is next Thursday, June 21 at Sunrise Assisted Living, 9101 Winton Road, from 4:30 until 6:30 P.M. The STBA is providing the beverages and Sunrise is providing food.

Deborah also reported that the next general meeting will be at the Powel Crosley YMCA on Thursday, July 12. It is a luncheon meeting.

Communications Report: Chip Berquist reported that the next newsletter will go out on June 25th and that all news articles must be in by June 22nd. A flyer went out to 750 businesses last week announcing the upcoming picnic and Expo.

Education Report: Bess Sprockett reported that New Burlington Elementary School has asked the Business Association to sponsor the "accelerated reading cart" program. Cost of sponsorship is $500 - $800. Students choose books or prizes from the cart as rewards for improving reading skills. A grant has been used to support the program in past years, but grant funding was not given for the next school year. Joe Gorman asked Bess to request a letter explaining the program in detail before the issue is voted on. Bob Trenkamp suggested that some guidelines be set up for determining how much money and what type of educational programs the STBA wishes to support. Joe asked Bob to draft something to that effect by the next meeting. Bess Sprockett will help Bob Trenkamp with the grant guidelines.

Land Use/Zoning Report: Bob Trenkamp reported that Bigg’s grocery is still looking to open at the Big Lots site on Winton Road. Currently they have many projects going on and that store is not a top priority at this time, so permits have not been applied for.

Other Items of Discussion: Melanie McNulty reported that the Colerain Township Business Association is hosting an Open House at 8:00 A.M. on July, 12 at the Colerain Senior Center, 4300 Springdale Road.

President, Joseph Gorman asked board members how things are going with their businesses as there seem to be a lot of lay offs in the Cincinnati business community.

Carr Tool Company — major restructuring in process with new major share holder, interim president and new Board of Directors.

Will Insurance — business good. Looking to hire part time person, but very difficult to find someone who wants to stay part time.

Queen City Balloons — summer is slow for the industry.

Brentwood Bowl — introducing new programs such as Teen Night, Rock and Roll Bowl, and Lock Ins.

Thomas Graham and Associates — very busy. Making use of co-ops from U.C. and Cincinnati State for part time help.

In Five Productions — very busy. Business up over 50% from last year. Commercial spots going out to large markets such as New York City area and other parts of the country.

Waycross Community Access — also very busy. Hired a new full time person and looking to hire a part time person.

Meetings: Next regular meeting is July 12 at Powel Crosley YMCA for lunch.

Next board meeting is August 9 at 8:00 at the Springfield Township Administration Building, small conference room.

The meeting was adjourned by Joe Gorman at 9:15.

Respectively submitted:

Melanie McNulty
